How consumer credit works

The minimum amount of your monthly payment depends on the capital borrowed and the repayment term you choose for your consumer credit.

Our loans range from €500 (revolving credit) to €75,000 (personal loan, car or motorcycle loan, debt consolidation), over terms of up to 180 months depending on the product.

To find out the exact amount of your monthly payment for your project, use our online simulators: they instantly calculate a payment tailored to your budget.

Yes. If you experience temporary difficulty meeting an instalment, Sodefina always looks first for an amicable solution: postponing one or more instalments, restructuring the debt, or adjusting your monthly payments, subject where applicable to contractually defined fees.

Any request for postponement must be sent to our customer service before the due date of the instalment concerned, from your client area or via our contact form.

Yes, in certain cases. If you make a partial early repayment, you can choose between reducing the remaining term of your loan or reducing the amount of the remaining instalments.

If you experience repayment difficulties, an adjustment to your monthly payments can also be considered with our customer service as part of an amicable solution. Outside these cases, the amount of your instalments is fixed by your contract.

Yes. The direct debit date for your instalments is set when you take out your contract. A change can be granted, subject to acceptance by our teams, to align it with the date you receive your income. This service is generally available once a year.

To request it, log in to your client area or contact our customer service.

Repayment of your instalments is made by automatic SEPA direct debit from the bank account you designated, on a fixed date agreed when your contract was signed.

This date appears in your credit agreement and on your amortisation schedule, available at any time from your client area.

Using consumer credit

Contact our customer service immediately: we can offer you solutions tailored to your situation (postponing an instalment, adjusting your monthly payments, a repayment plan). The sooner you alert us, the more amicable solutions are available.

In the event of serious financial difficulties, you can also approach an adviser at the Banco de Portugal to benefit from the over-indebtedness scheme provided for by law.

You have a legal withdrawal period of 14 calendar days from the date your credit agreement is signed, without having to justify your decision and without penalty.

This period can only be shortened at your express written request. If you withdraw after the funds have been used, you must repay the capital used, plus interest accrued between the date the funds were released and the repayment date.

Yes. The entire process, from simulation to signature, is fully digital at Sodefina. Your electronic signature complies with the European eIDAS regulation and has the same legal value as a handwritten signature.

A copy of your signed contract is provided to you immediately by electronic means and remains available from your client area.

Yes, you can repay your loan early, in full or in part, at any time and without having to justify your request. Contact our customer service specifying the amount and date you wish, and you will receive an early repayment statement within 7 working days.

An early repayment charge (ERC) may be due if the amount repaid over a rolling 12-month period exceeds €10,000, but no charge is due below this threshold.

Yes, that is your right of withdrawal: you have 14 calendar days after signing your contract to change your mind, at no cost and without justification. You simply need to inform Sodefina in writing within this period.

If the funds have already been paid to you, you will need to return them together with interest accrued up to the repayment date.

Taking out consumer credit

Once we receive your complete file, you receive a decision in principle within 24 to 48 working hours. If approved, you have a legal withdrawal period of 14 calendar days, which you can expressly waive to receive the funds sooner.

Once this period has elapsed, or the waiver has been expressed, the funds are released to your bank account as soon as possible. For a linked loan (car, motorcycle, home improvement), the funds are paid directly to the seller or service provider after the contract is signed.

As a general rule: valid proof of identity, proof of address less than 3 months old, your last 3 payslips or your latest tax notice, and a bank account statement (IBAN) in your name.

For a linked loan (car, motorcycle, home improvement), a quote or invoice for the item being financed may also be requested. All documents can be submitted digitally directly when applying online, with no need to post anything.

A decision in principle is a first decision, favourable or not, made by Sodefina after reviewing your application, before your supporting documents have been fully received and checked. It tells you whether your project is financeable and on what indicative terms.

It is not final: the final decision is only made once your complete file has been received and checked.

Yes. You can take out consumer credit as a co-borrower with your spouse, civil partner, or any other individual, with no marital tie required. Joint applications can strengthen your file by adding together the income taken into account when calculating your repayment capacity.

In return, each co-borrower is jointly and severally liable for repaying the loan in full, and supporting documents will be requested for both people.

Definitions relating to consumer credit

The APR (Annual Percentage Rate) is the reference indicator for comparing different credit offers. In addition to the borrowing rate applied to the outstanding capital, it includes all compulsory costs linked to obtaining the credit (arrangement fees, compulsory insurance where applicable).

It is disclosed to you before you take out any credit, in the European Standard Pre-Contractual Information Sheet (ESIS). For a fixed-rate loan, the APR remains unchanged throughout the term of the contract, and can never exceed the usury rate set quarterly by the Banco de Portugal.

A personal loan is an unlinked consumer credit: you are free to use the funds for any project, without having to justify how they are used to Sodefina.

The amount borrowed is paid to you in a single payment, and you repay it in fixed monthly instalments over the full term of the contract.

Revolving credit is a permanent facility made available to you by Sodefina in the form of a reserve of money that you use freely, in whole or in part, according to your needs. Each repayment automatically replenishes your available reserve.

You can repay in cash mode (interest-free, debited the following month) or in credit mode (monthly instalments with the variable APR set out in your contract applied).

Unlinked credit, such as a personal loan, is credit whose use is not tied to any particular purchase: there is no legal link between the loan and a specific good or service.

You therefore do not need to provide Sodefina with any proof of purchase, unlike with linked credit.

Linked credit, such as a car, motorcycle or home improvement loan, is legally tied to the specific purchase it finances. This gives you additional protection: if the sale is cancelled or the item is not delivered to you, the credit agreement is automatically terminated, with no amount remaining owed.

The funds are paid directly to the seller or service provider, not into your bank account.

Documents relating to my consumer credit

A copy of your electronically signed contract is provided to you immediately by electronic means when you take out the loan, and remains available at any time in the "My documents" section of your client area, where it is archived for the full term of the credit.

Your amortisation schedule is available to download from your client area, in the "My documents" section. It details, for each instalment, the split between capital and interest, as well as the outstanding capital.

This document is also provided to you when you take out the loan. If you cannot find it, contact our customer service via the contact form.

Consumer credit protections

The Central de Responsabilidades de Crédito (CRC), managed by the Banco de Portugal, records characterised repayment incidents on credit granted to individuals, as well as over-indebtedness situations. Checking it is compulsory before any credit is granted, and is entirely free for the consumer.

You can obtain the information held about you at any time from a Banco de Portugal branch, and request a correction in the event of an error.

Borrower insurance covers all or part of your repayments if you are no longer able to meet them due to a serious event (death, disability, incapacity to work, loss of employment).

For consumer credit, it is entirely optional — refusing it can never result in your credit being refused — but it is strongly recommended to protect you and your loved ones in the event of hardship.

Yes. All communications between your browser and our servers are protected by the TLS 1.3 protocol. Card payments are processed by PCI DSS certified providers and secured by the 3D Secure protocol: your card details never pass through our servers and are never stored by Sodefina.

Our data is hosted in ISO 27001 certified data centres, exclusively within the European Union. Access to your client area is further protected by strong two-factor authentication.

You benefit in particular from a 14-calendar-day withdrawal period, the right to be informed if a refusal is based on the CRC, the ability to repay early without having to justify it, and, for linked credit, automatic termination of the contract if the underlying sale is cancelled.

In the event of a dispute, you can also freely refer the matter to the consumer mediator appointed by Sodefina, or to the European online dispute resolution platform.

Sodefina offers, through a partner insurer, three borrower insurance plans: Death + Total and Permanent Loss of Autonomy (DC + PTIA), an intermediate plan adding cover for your instalments in the event of temporary incapacity to work (DC + PTIA + ITT), and a comprehensive plan additionally including cover for involuntary loss of employment (DC + PTIA + ITT + Loss of employment).

All three plans are entirely optional.
